Coelacanth - Shirt Design by scumbugg Coelacanth - Shirt Design by scumbugg
The Coelacanth is an ancient fish that once lived among the dinosaurs. Long thought extinct since the late Cretaceous period, they went undiscovered by scientists until 1938.

I usually go texture crazy on most of my stuff, but this time i wanted something clean, and dreamy. It turned out looking like cotton candy... yum.

I've been so busy with freelance that this literally sat on the side of my desk for about six months. It feels good to finally finish it, and put it to good use.

This is currently in the running over at DBH. Any votes you could sling my way would be much appreciated!

thanks!

inspiration for this one was kind of strange. the word "coelacanth" just popped into my head, but i wasnt sure exactly what it was. i had probably heard the word somewhere before, and it just stuck in there. i did some research and quickly realized how awesome this fish is. i was supposed to start working on an album cover for my friends band, "dark blue dark green" and i felt that a school of coelecanth swimming thru the sky would represent not only their sound, but offer the concept of a vast collective wisdom that a school of these fish would have, being as ancient as they are. merging the natural world and the surreal world is my usual theme for artwork. anyway, i was basing my interpretation of dark blue dark green's sound off of their older music, and when i heard their newer stuff i decided the coelacanth didnt fit as well. i wound up doing this for them instead for a more organic rhythm feel, and the coelacanth sat on my desk forever while i finished other freelance projects.

sorry for the long winded explanation, but the inspiration for this one was especially complex. usually i just draw something i see on david attenbourough specials. almost everything that man has done is worthy of an artistic interpretation.

koool interesting, i like tat your thinking about what you do and ur not just doing thinks that look good i mean i do sometimes but its good to try do this. lol and its not a long winded explanation i like the fact that you took time out to write this because i like to hear what artistis are thinking, and i prefere this than just something like oh, fish, i thought they were intresting, lol, i like to hear the story behind things. keep up the good work your work is very inspiring to me, i also finished the thaw shoes loookin good. should be up soon.

This is a brilliant piece man. I really dig how you didn't do a dark outline around the cloudy pink swirls. It makes the fish pop, and adds a really comfy clean feel to the overall image. Very tight stuff.

i used to just do it by staring at a $1 bill and abstracting on that floral pattern that it's got. works decently enough for now.

I love it. Such an ugly fish (tho super cool) and put into a dreamy happy place.
Great, as per usual... and it does look like cotton candy so that's always a plus with me!
